Cardano’s Hoskinson rejects Ethereum’s AI cryptography warning

Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has openly criticized Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, following concerns Buterin raised about the future security of cryptographic systems in the age of artificial intelligence.

Dispute over lattice cryptography

In a detailed post on X, Hoskinson responded to Buterin’s recent comments that rapid advances in AI could destabilize current cryptographic solutions, particularly lattice cryptography, within the next two years.

Buterin suggested that artificial intelligence might accelerate mathematical discovery, potentially uncovering new attack vectors and rendering existing cryptographic safeguards obsolete much more quickly than anticipated.

Buterin stated that as AI improves, it may discover mathematical shortcuts that invalidate widely adopted security protocols, raising concerns that post-quantum security could be jeopardized far sooner than experts predict.

Hoskinson dismissed these warnings as speculative and suggested that Buterin’s comments lack mathematical evidence. He stated that lattice cryptography, a core part of the post-quantum security paradigm, has been extensively researched and tested for decades, with ongoing refinements based on emerging attack strategies.

He further argued that discouraging the use of lattice cryptography could undermine efforts to secure digital communications against threats from future quantum computers. Hoskinson cautioned that undermining faith in these systems might hamper the transition from classical cryptography to more quantum-resistant solutions, putting sensitive data at risk over the long term.

AI’s impact on cryptographic security

The debate intensified after Justin Drake, a well-known Ethereum researcher, warned of an impending threat he called “bunker mode.” Drake suggested that advancements in artificial intelligence could soon pose risks to the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which is widely used for authorizing cryptocurrency transactions.

Drake outlined the possibility that a sufficiently powerful mathematical breakthrough—potentially discovered or accelerated by AI—could enable attackers to extract private keys from public keys far more efficiently than current estimates suggest.

Drake cautioned the crypto community that if AI continues to progress at its current rate, foundational cryptographic algorithms such as ECDSA could be compromised sooner than the industry anticipates.

Buterin later echoed Drake’s concerns, adding that the pace of AI-driven mathematical progress could reshape the landscape of cryptography. However, Buterin advised holders of cryptocurrencies to refrain from moving their assets preemptively, stating there is no immediate need for drastic action.

Mini dictionary: ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) is the primary cryptographic algorithm used for transaction authorization in most major cryptocurrencies, valued for its efficiency and security. Potential breakthroughs in solving its underlying mathematical problems could jeopardize the safety of digital assets secured by ECDSA.
