Report: CoreWeave’s three founders cashed out $3.3 billions before stock price crash

华尔街见闻2026/10/16 13:15
The three co-founders of CoreWeave have cumulatively cashed out over $3.3 billion since the company went public, while its current stock price has plummeted more than 50% from its peak. At present, the company's bonds maturing in 2032 have fallen into distressed territory, with CDS spreads surging to 1,117 basis points, implying a default probability of 63%. Market concerns about its ability to repay debt are now spreading along the financing chain of AI computing power leasing.

CoreWeave's three co-founders collectively cashed out over $3.3 billion before the company's share price crashed, while the company's bonds have now entered distressed territory, and credit default swap spreads have soared to historic highs, sharply heightening market concerns over its ability to meet debt obligations.

According to statistics from Bloomberg based on company filings, Michael Intrator, Brian Venturo, and Brannin McBee have been undergoing large-scale share sell-offs since the company's IPO in March 2025. In 2026 alone, their collective cash-out amounted to $2.4 billion. Meanwhile, CoreWeave's stock price has dropped by more than 50% from its May peak, erasing about $15 billion from the founders' equity on paper.

The company's debt pressures are accelerating. By the end of this week, CoreWeave's 9.625% unsecured bonds due in 2032 had fallen to about 76 cents on the dollar, breaching the typical market threshold for distressed debt. Five-year credit default swap spreads have surged to a record 1,117 basis points, implying a 63% probability of default within five years.

Scale of Founders' Share Sales: Gradual Sell-Offs Post-IPO, Total Cash-Out Exceeds $3.3 Billion

According to Bloomberg, the three founders' share sales spanned the entire post-listing period and were substantial in scale.

Venturo has cashed out over $1.2 billion in total, representing more than 35% of his original stake at the time of the IPO; since the IPO, McBee has sold shares worth about $1.06 billion, equivalent to 40.4% of his undiluted stake; for Intrator, share sales this year have exceeded $907 million. Altogether, the three have cashed out over $3.3 billion. In 2026 alone, their collective cash-out reached $2.4 billion.

These sales took place while the company's stock price was at its peak. Subsequently, CoreWeave's share price has dropped by over 50% from its May peak, causing the paper value of the founders' remaining equity to shrink by about $15 billion.

Bonds Enter Distressed Zone, Default Risk Pricing Soars

CoreWeave's credit market indicators have been flashing persistent warnings.

The company's unsecured bonds maturing in 2032 fell to approximately 76 cents on the dollar this week—a typical sign of distressed debt in the market. At the same time, CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spreads have soared to 1,117 basis points, an all-time high, with an implied five-year default probability of 63%.

CoreWeave's business model is to lease data center computing power equipped with NVIDIA chips to clients. Market concerns about its debt levels are now spreading to broader hyperscale cloud service providers and emerging cloud computing operators, dragging down the overall industry's financing outlook.

Chain Risk: CoreWeave May Become a Key Node in Multi-Layered Debt Chains

The potential risks associated with CoreWeave go beyond its own balance sheet.

CoreWeave is not only the borrower on its own unsecured bonds but also a key tenant for several data center high-yield bond issuers—repayment of these latter bonds depends to a significant extent on CoreWeave making rental payments on schedule. If CoreWeave's current capital cost is already as high as 16%, then the implied capital cost for these related bond issuers backed by its lease receivables would be even higher.

Gartner previously estimated that more than 80% of emerging cloud computing service providers will be forced out of the market. The above chain transmission route means that if CoreWeave suffers a major credit event, the impact would not be limited to the company itself but could ripple across the entire financing ecosystem centered on AI computing power leasing. Deutsche Bank has also commented on this matter, though the specifics have yet to be fully disclosed.
