According to Gelonghui on April 9, ExxonMobil, a major American oil industry company, announced on April 8 that, affected by the conflict in Iran, its earnings for the first quarter of this year may decrease by $6.5 billion, most of which is due to accounting treatment of hedging contracts. Hedging aims to offset the risk of price fluctuations by carrying out transactions in the futures market contrary to those in the spot market. Traders, while buying or selling physical goods, perform opposite operations in the futures market. On April 8, ExxonMobil stated that the estimated loss of $3.5–4.9 billion in the first quarter was due to the soaring oil and gas prices caused by the conflict in Iran, as well as the accounting treatment of financial derivatives used for hedging prices during transportation of products. In addition to losses from hedging contracts, ExxonMobil also suffered losses of $400–800 million due to production and refining capacity being hindered; trading losses due to failure to deliver physical goods hedged by financial derivatives amounted to $600–800 million.
