As concerns over an escalation in the Middle East outweigh intensive diplomatic efforts in the region, crude oil futures prices have risen. Francesco Martoccia, an analyst at Citi Research, stated in a report that the political deadlock following Israel's elections "heightens uncertainty at a particularly sensitive time for US-Israel and Iran relations, and also increases the risk of renewed military conflict escalation." He pointed out that if the situation escalates again, the geopolitical risk premium could rise further; if credible progress is made toward reaching an agreement, the existing risk premium could partially retreat. He noted, "The outcome of this election does not change our baseline expectation that an agreement will be reached through negotiations before the end of the year, but it does raise the probability of more turbulent developments with potentially disruptive effects."
