XRP and XLM Are Prime Candidates to Help G20. Here’s the Latest
The G20 wants 75% of cross-border payments to reach recipients within one hour by the end of 2027, with retail payment costs falling to 1% or less.
With these targets approaching, crypto researcher SMQKE has identified XRP and Stellar (XLM) as potential candidates for helping the global financial system meet its objectives.
In a post on X, SMQKE shared an article from OneSafe titled “The G20’s Vision for Cross-Border Payments and XRP’s Role.” The researcher accompanied the image with the statement, “XRP AND XLM ARE PRIME CANDIDATES TO HELP ACHIEVE THE G20’S 2027 CROSS-BORDER PAYMENT GOALS Documented.”
The post connects the two digital assets with an international effort to make cross-border transfers faster and cheaper. However, the G20 has not officially designated either cryptocurrency as a solution for achieving these targets.
The G20’s Cross-Border Payment Targets
The G20 established its cross-border payment roadmap through work coordinated by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and other international bodies. The initiative seeks to improve the speed, cost, transparency, accessibility, and reliability of international payments.
Under the roadmap, at least 75% of cross-border payments across wholesale, retail, and remittance transactions should reach recipients within one hour by the end of 2027. The targets also seek to bring the global average cost of retail cross-border payments to 1% or less, with no individual payment corridor exceeding 3%.
These objectives address longstanding challenges in international transfers, where transactions can involve multiple intermediaries, currency conversions, and settlement processes.
The OneSafe article shared by SMQKE identifies the XRP Ledger and Stellar networks as potential candidates because both support rapid, relatively low-cost transactions. Their technical capabilities could make them relevant to financial institutions exploring alternatives to conventional cross-border payment infrastructure.
XRP and Stellar’s Potential Role
XRP operates on the XRP Ledger, which supports payments and asset transfers. Stellar also provides infrastructure for moving value across borders, including transactions involving different currencies and digital assets.
Supporters of both networks believe their transaction capabilities could help payment providers reduce settlement times and costs. However, the practical benefits depend on adoption, liquidity, integration with financial institutions, and the availability of payment services across relevant markets.
The G20’s published roadmap does not name XRP or Stellar as officially selected solutions. The claim that they are prime candidates therefore represents an assessment of their potential capabilities rather than an official designation by the international body.
Progress Toward the 2027 Deadline
The targets also face significant implementation challenges. The FSB’s October 2025 progress report warned that the international community was unlikely to achieve all its cross-border payment targets by the end of 2027.
The comment raises a practical consideration for both networks. Transaction speed and low fees alone cannot guarantee widespread adoption. Payment providers must build the necessary infrastructure, establish liquidity arrangements, and connect their services to existing financial systems.
XRP and Stellar may offer technology relevant to the G20’s objectives, but their contribution will depend on real-world implementation. With the 2027 deadline approaching, adoption and measurable improvements in cross-border payments will provide a clearer indication of their potential role.
