Copper prices are set for their third weekly decline in four weeks. As the sell-off in technology stocks intensifies, overall market risk appetite has been hit, and copper—a metal widely used in data centers and power infrastructure—has not been spared. On the London market, copper futures are trading above $14,150 per ton, with a cumulative decline of nearly 2% this week, continuing the pullback from the record high reached in September. On Friday, the global sell-off in technology stocks worsened, as earnings reports from major technology companies failed to convince investors whether the "AI boom" could be sustained. Analysts state that the stock market sell-off is putting "tremendous pressure" on a range of metals, from copper to gold. They point out: "Given continued weak demand in other industries, the stock market's performance is impacting short-term sentiment in the metals market." Nonetheless, copper prices are still up roughly 14% so far this year. Previously, the market had anticipated that the Trump Administration might impose tariffs on refined metals, prompting large volumes of metals to flow into the United States, thereby pushing copper prices higher. However, traders remain uncertain whether Washington will ultimately implement this measure.
