Share prices of freight railroads CSX, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern rose Thursday after the companies reported that higher fuel prices are prompting shippers to shift loads to rail from trucks.
Rail is around three to four times more fuel-efficient than hauling goods on a truck on a highway. Containers and trailers that can be transported on trucks but are being taken by railroads-known as rail intermodal loads-increased 10.4% for the week ended Oct. 10, according to the Association of American Railroads.
CSX, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern reported an increase in volume of 5%, 6% and 3% respectively in the third quarter but also said that fuel expenses have weighed on margins.
