Tesla noted in its earnings report that production of Optimus, the humanoid robot that Elon Musk views as the future of the company, had begun in the Fremont, Calif., facility.
On the company's earnings call Wednesday evening, Musk told investors that "I remain convinced Optimus will be the biggest product on Earth."
But Musk also cautioned that the robot's rollout remains in the distance; "it's about a year or so," he said, noting that "we still have a lot to get through."
The robots being manufactured in Fremont are the first production-quality models the company has made thus far, Tesla said in the earnings report.
"We're building up an Optimus Academy where Optimus can practice doing a very wide range of tasks," Musk added. "The big difference with Optimus versus the cars is we don't have this vast fleet of cars from which we can gather training data."
