Apple's Contactless Payment System Under Scrutiny by UK Competition Regulator

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/20 10:55
06:55 AM EDT, 10/20/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Apple (AAPL) is under pressure from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority to loosen restrictions and fees on the contactless payment function on its smartphones, the regulator said Tuesday. The aim is to allow UK fintech firms and other businesses greater market access, the regulator said. The CMA said UK businesses had voiced concerns that Apple's current contactless payment access arrangements "may not be commercially viable, that fees, and other terms may be onerous." The CMA is consulting with experts on proposals expected to result in "substantially" lower access fees, require Apple to grant access through the main contactless technology standards, and change how UK businesses build digital products and services on Apple's iPhone, it said. Apple did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.

AI trading weakens, funds return to safe-haven assets, and U.S. Treasury yields hit their lowest level in nearly a month

The outlook for AI trading is being reassessed, reshaping global asset allocation. Stock market pressure is prompting investors to flock to safe-haven assets such as US Treasuries, yen, and Swiss franc. The 30-year US Treasury yield hit 5.38%, the lowest level since September 23. The yen appreciated 0.3% against the US dollar to 157.68, and the Swiss franc rose 0.2%. Safe-haven buying emerged as oil prices surged due to an attack in Saudi Arabia. The future direction will depend on which theme dominates: inflationary pressures or a cooling in AI trading.
