Priceless Pink Diamond Returns After 100 Years as Prices Crash

A priceless pink diamond is back on public view in France, almost 100 years to the day after its theft. The display opens as natural diamond prices sit at record lows. The nine-carat Grand Cond went on show at the Chteau de Chantilly, north of Paris, on October 17. However, the wider market tells a different story about mined stones. What Makes the Pink Diamond So Hard to Replace? Rare pink diamond goes on display in France 100 years after amateur heist Two amateur thieves raided the chteau overnight in October 1926. They hid the pink diamond inside a hollowed-out apple at their hotel. Roughly two months later, a hungry hotel maid bit into the apple and struck the stone. Since then, visitors have only seen a replica. The Grand Cond owes its color to intense pressure that distorted its crystal structure deep underground. Yellow and blue diamonds, by contrast, get their hue from traces of nitrogen or boron. Fewer than 0.15% of diamonds graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are mainly pink, Sothebys says. Yet history, not geology alone, makes the Grand Cond priceless. It has belonged to the Cond collection since 1740 and survived the French Revolution. Why Are Ordinary Diamonds Worth Less Than Ever? Most diamonds lack that pedigree, and their prices show it. Unlike a pink diamond, the average 1-carat natural stone now costs $3,898, CNBC reported. That marks a 51% drop from $8,007 in 2021. The Diamond Standard Index, which tracks investment-grade stones, hit a record low of 2,490 points in early August. Polished prices show the same trend. The IDEX Diamond Index, a benchmark for polished diamond prices, has lost nearly half its value since early 2022. IDEX Diamond Index Price. As a result, lab-grown stones featured in 61% of engagement rings sold in 2025. The gap between diamonds versus precious metals keeps widening, as gold has doubled since 2011. The Grand Cond shows where value now sits. Commodities trade on weight, and even gold faces a Bank of America forecast below $4,000 into year-end. Silver trades near its 2026 low. A pink diamond, by contrast, trades on rarity and provenance. Similarly, rare Pokmon cards have beaten Bitcoin and gold since 2021. If lab-grown supply keeps rising, provenance may become the only diamond premium that lasts. Read the article at BeInCrypto

1. Technology stocks fell sharply as investor interest shifted toward energy and selected defensive assets. From October 10 to 16, the Nasdaq 100 declined 5.49% and the S&P 500 fell 1.95%, while the Dow gained 0.67% and WTI crude rose 10.41%. BTC, ETH, and SOL declined 1.27%, 2.65%, and 4.44%, respectively. This week's technology earnings will be an important test of whether revenue growth, margins, and cash flow can justify current valuations. Better-than-expected results could help stabilize markets in the near term. 2. Crypto continues to see pockets of strong activity, but a broad-based altcoin season has yet to materialize. CoinMarketCap's (CMC) Altcoin Season Index stood at 54 as of the October 18 UTC daily observation, below the altcoin-season threshold of 75, while BTC dominance rose to 60.08%. Our proxy leverage ratio fluctuated between 4.00 and 4.07 during the week, showing no sustained increase and suggesting limited appetite for additional leverage. Meanwhile, as major exchanges expand access to traditional financial assets, the recent sell-off in AI-related equities could attract short-term speculative capital away from crypto. Such capital rotation could make it more difficult for a new altcoin season to take hold. 3. Papertrade's loss-to-mine model has generated significant interest across the crypto community. The protocol combines high-leverage derivatives trading with zero slippage and a mechanism that rewards trading losses with PAPER tokens. Across the eight complete UTC days from October 10 to 17, cumulative reported revenue reached approximately $56.08 million, including $51.90 million distributed to token holders. With growing participation from key opinion leaders (KOLs), Papertrade has reportedly ranked among the top three platforms by profitability in the broader market recently. Assets to watch: BTC, ETH, SOL, ARB, OP, SKHYNIX, SKHY, META, TSLA, LRCX, and SPCX. Key research priorities this week: Cash flow performance in technology earnings; the relative discount and holding costs of the two SK Hynix contracts; and U.S. initial jobless claims and PMI data. Weekly market data cover the period through October 16, while research information was verified through October 18. Observation periods are specified separately for each chart.
