- A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday that dating app operator Bumble (BMBL) is in advanced talks with Ithaca Holdings on going private, in a deal that would value Bumble at about $1 billion.

This Austin, Texas-based company had a market value of around $389 million at the close of the previous trading day. On the news, its share price soared by about 50% to $3.81.

Bumble and Ithaca— a tech holding company founded by Silicon Valley executives Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman— did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Earlier this year, Reuters exclusively reported ((link)) that Bumble was exploring a sale amid a slowdown in the online dating industry.

In the fiercely competitive dating app market, Bumble and its larger rival (link) Match Group MTCH.O (which owns Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid) are under pressure (link), particularly as engagement drops with Gen Z users growing weary of endless swiping.

Bumble was founded in 2014 by CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd, who pioneered the “women-first” model for online dating.

Under Herd’s leadership— she stepped down in January 2024 and returned as CEO in March last year— the company introduced AI-based features and new ways for users to interact, aiming to revive growth momentum.

For the full fiscal year 2025, Bumble’s total number of paid users fell by over 11% to about 3.7 million, while annual revenue dropped nearly 10% to approximately $966 million.

In the second quarter ended June 30, its total number of paid users dropped 16.4% to 3.2 million. The company’s share price has fallen about 29% this year.
