October 9 – Goldman Sachs pointed out that India's implementation of a 30% profit margin cap on non-scheduled anticancer drugs (link) will have limited impact on hospitals. The report states that, based on preliminary discussions with hospital chain groups, such drugs account for less than 5% of hospital revenue and 2% to 2.5% of operating profit. The report adds that hospitals can offset the losses by slightly adjusting service charges, such as administration fees. According to a government notice, an expert committee will finalize the list of drugs to be brought under regulation. Driven by the anticipated price cap, the share prices of Max Healthcare MAXE.NS, Apollo Hospitals APLH.NS, and Fortis Healthcare FOHE.NS rose by 1.6% to 2.5%. Previously, since September 30, these stocks had collectively declined by 11% to 11.5%. Year-to-date, FOHE and MAXE are down 11.7% and 14.8%, respectively, while APLH has risen by 11%. BUZZ - Leerink says concerns over growth in the medical technology sector may overshadow third-quarter performance

October 9 – Leerink Partners stated that, ahead of the third-quarter earnings reports, it remains cautious on the medical technology sector and pointed out that the short-term market environment is “somewhat uncertain.” The firm noted increasing competition in some markets, including the cardiac devices and diabetes care sectors; uncertainty in surgical volumes amid rising costs; weak consumer confidence; and pressure on hospital budgets due to higher interest rates. “We believe that even if third-quarter results are positive, they may be overshadowed by ongoing market concerns about profitability and growth prospects for 2027 and beyond,” the broker said. The firm believes that positive factors for specific companies could help Medtronic (MDT.N) and Tandem Diabetes Care (TNDM.O) outperform the broader industry during these sector-wide headwinds. The broker said it remains most cautious on PROCEPT BioRobotics (PRCT.O) and Insulet (PODD.O), as a slowdown in adoption and intensifying competition may lead to lowered expectations for 2027. The strongest growth outlook in over two years is approaching! US medical device stocks still need to endure another sluggish earnings season

The third-quarter profit growth of medical device companies is expected to be only 4.8%, but it is projected to accelerate to 13% in the first quarter of next year, marking the strongest performance in over two years. However, policy uncertainties and product recalls have dampened confidence, and the market is awaiting a recovery by 2027.
