Sector Update: Tech Stocks Mixed Wednesday Afternoon

01:34 PM EDT, 09/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Tech stocks were mixed Wednesday afternoon, with the State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rising 0.8% and the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) shedding 0.8%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index declined 0.3%. In corporate news, the Federal Trade Commission is opening an investigation into Amazon-backed (AMZN) Anthropic, Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI and other AI companies to determine potential dangers their products pose to consumers, Reuters reported. Separately, OpenAI has been sued by a non-profit tech safety group over the Hugging Face cyberattack carried out by the company's AI agents in July, according to a complaint filed Tuesday. Amazon and Microsoft shares were each adding 1.6%. Executives from Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google, Anthropic, Meta (META), Nvidia (NVDA), OpenAI and SpaceX's (SPCX) xAI agreed to implement a four-layer control and audit system for AI under an accord signed Tuesday with President Donald Trump. Alphabet's shares were up 2.7%. Meta was down 0.6%, Nvidia was adding 1.4%, and SpaceX rose 1.5%. Synopsys (SNPS) and Amazon have signed a multiyear agreement valued at more than $1 billion to accelerate Amazon's custom silicon and AI-powered cloud infrastructure, the companies said Wednesday. Synopsys shares rose 2%.
