Meme Coin Digest for September 29: $35 Billion Market Faces Major Reality Check

u.today 7 h
  • The meme market is rotating, not rallying: the category's market cap is down about 4% on the day, and the large caps mostly tread water, with $PUMP the standout thanks to Pump.fun's fee and buyback data.

  • The biggest 24-hour gains sit in hours-old, thinly traded tokens such as Baby Cali and Shareholder Cat, which are already reversing.

  • $DOG, $SPX and $NPC are down 11-14%, so without a broad meme season the market rewards short-lived catalysts and punishes late entries, with $BTC reclaiming $85,000 as the level to watch.

The market for meme coins is divided but active. Established Solana tokens have seen recent gains, but the industry as a whole has weakened and quick trades have reversed in a matter of hours.

According to the most recent September 28 snapshots, the market cap of the meme category was close to $35.2 billion, down 4.2% over the previous day; a different snapshot showed a 1.7% decline in the overall cryptocurrency market. It's not a clear sector-wide breakout.

Biggest Meme Coin Market Winners

The biggest 24-hour gains in meme coins are coming from the smallest tokens, while the large caps mostly tread water.

On DexScreener's gainers board, the top spots belong to tokens that are hours or days old:

  • Baby Cali (Solana): up about 11,400% to an $8.9 million market cap
  • Shareholder Cat (SHCAT) on Robinhood's chain: up roughly 7,300% to $2.6 million
  • Pevlunora (also on Robinhood's chain): up about 2,300% on an $857,000 market cap

Baby Cali and Shareholder Cat are already off their highs, down 17% and 37% in the last hour. With liquidity of $289,000 to $576,000, those prices are fragile. Robinhood-chain tokens fill more than a third of the top 30, so that is where fresh money is rotating.

Older small caps are the more durable winners. e/acc is up 116% to an $8.3 million market cap, RuneScape Gold has roughly doubled to $7.4 million, Super Inu is up about 75% to $23.8 million, and NEARLY is up about 70% on the $NEAR chain.

Among the large names, $PUMP leads: up about 12% at $0.0053 for a $2.44 billion market cap, the biggest token on the board. DefiLlama shows why it has a bid: Pump.fun took in $2.11 million in fees over 24 hours, and $1.24 million of that went to holders through buybacks. MarsCoin (+15%, $149 million) and Cash Cat (+6%, $184 million) are the other notable gainers above $100 million.

The names that led the week are quieter. $PENGU jumped about 38% earlier this week on Korea Blockchain Week hype. $PENGU, BONK, and WIF are now down between 2% and 6% on the day, so a 100x on thin liquidity is not the same as a winner you can exit.

Biggest Meme Coin Market Losers

Among well-known names, a same-day tracker showed these biggest 24-hour drops:

  • $DOG•GO•TO•THE•MOON ($DOG, Bitcoin Runes): down 13.95%
  • SPX6900 ($SPX, Ethereum-origin, with bridged versions on other networks): down 11.60%
  • Non-Playable Coin ($NPC, launched on Ethereum and also available on Solana, Base and BNB Chain): down 11.35%

Live trackers may vary as prices change, and these are rolling 24-hour readings rather than September 28 closing prices. $PUMP's abrupt intraday reversal should also be noted as a warning. It is a poor example of a move that persisted throughout the day because of the subsequent four-hour decline, even though its early jump was real in the cited report.

The larger trend on the losing side is that while a few well-known names continue to rise this week, a number of coins may fall sharply.

The Meme Market Outlook

The meme coin market is rotating, not running. Traders are chasing individual stories, like Pump.fun platform news, event-driven attention around $PENGU, and a few liquid Solana leaders, instead of buying the whole sector.

DexScreener's Trending 6H list shows how narrow the action is. The top Solana spots went to tokens only hours old. NEARPAD gained about 1,650% in six hours on a roughly $849,000 market cap.

$PENGU/USDT Chart by TradingView

Korean-themed "busan shark" rose about 2,927% to around $1.8M, and ASTEROID was up 5,342% on the day. Robinhood chain pairs take up roughly half of the top 100, with Cash Cat, Artificial Inu, and Pons among the larger names. $PUMP sits near a $2.33 billion market cap, up about 12% on the day.

The other side of the list is just as loud. JACK fell 86% in six hours after trading $12.8M against only $54K of liquidity, and PAID is off 42%. Several pairs show liquidity roughly equal to market cap, which usually means a dust pool that is hard to exit or a straight up honeypot. Breadth is uneven: a few tokens with a clear catalyst are running, and the rest of the list is bleeding.

What's Next?

Without a broad meme season, the market rewards short-lived stories with a catalyst and punishes late entries. Watch whether $BTC reclaims $85,000, and whether the leaders keep their liquidity once the new launches fade.
