After years of waiting and another delay, Tesla (TSLA.US) postpones the Roadster debut to October 15 as severe weather forces the event to stop.

Zhitong Finance APP has learned that Tesla (TSLA.US) has rescheduled the unveiling of its next-generation Roadster, originally set for this week, to October 15.

The company updated on social media platform X: “We have been closely monitoring the weather conditions with local meteorologists, but given the forecast of severe weather and that this event can only be held outdoors, we have made the difficult decision to reschedule.” The event is still expected to take place at the SpaceX (SPCX.US) test base in McGregor, Texas.

This electric car manufacturer has yet to announce the final price, production schedule, or customer delivery date for the highly anticipated Roadster.

The highlight of this event is expected to be a demonstration of the Roadster possibly equipped with a cold gas propulsion system from SpaceX. Tesla’s “Go for launch” teaser and years of comments from Elon Musk have raised expectations that the car could achieve short-term lift and hovering effects, and there may even be an unmanned demonstration in Texas. The cold gas thrusters generate short bursts of thrust using compressed gas, instead of traditional combustion rockets.

Looking back, the Roadster was the company’s first mass-produced model. Sold between 2008 and 2012, it is widely regarded as a key proof-of-concept to show consumers that a lithium-ion battery sports car could offer both real driving range and high performance.

The car was built on a heavily modified Lotus Elise chassis, equipped with an AC induction motor, with a real-world range of about 200 miles. It was released in limited quantities, with a price tag in the six-figure US dollar range or higher, and total production of around 2,450 units. Tesla subsequently shifted its focus to the Model S, and the Roadster was discontinued.

In 2017, the second-generation Roadster prototype was unveiled, positioned as a pure electric supercar, claiming at the time 0-60 mph acceleration in under 2 seconds, a top speed of over 250 mph, a battery pack of about 200 kWh, and a range of up to 620 miles.
