Shares of MongoDB on Monday were on pace for their worst daily decline in nearly seven months after the database company said its president and CEO has stepped down, effective immediately, for a position at Meta Platforms.

MongoDB stock fell 20% to $327.62 on Monday and was on pace for its largest daily percentage decline since March 3, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Meta stock, meanwhile, fell 4% to $721.40.

The company said that Chirantan Desai has stepped down as president and CEO effective immediately to "pursue a senior role" at Meta Platforms. The Facebook parent said separately Monday that Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer.

MongoDB appointed Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO. Ittycheria previously served as MongoDB president and CEO from 2014 to 2025.

MongoDB added that it has initiated a search process to identify the next permanent CEO. MongoDB also said it "remains confident" in the outlook for the business and reaffirmed its quarterly and fiscal-year guidance.

The abrupt change in executive management comes a day before MongoDB holds its investor day event.

"As evidenced by the market reaction, this is a real shocker," Guggenheim Securities analyst Howard Ma said in a research note.

Ma added that while it's clearly a negative for the company, the "only slight positive news" is that Ittycheria will reassume leading MongoDB on an interim basis.

"There is no one that is better suited to run MongoDB," Ma said, who added that the share price decline Monday could offer an "attractive entry" into the stock.

D.A. Davidson noted that Desai's departure was "very disappointing" development. Needham added that the announcement was "unfortunate" given how close it came to MongoDB's investor day.

"He leaves the company in a stronger position that when he found it," Needham noted.

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Thomas Blakey said in a research note that investor focus likely will quickly shift to the investor day event on Tuesday with key questions being the durability of any long-term targets presented under interim leadership and the timeline for a permanent CEO appointment.

Desai has left MongoDB after less than a year in the top job and will now lead Meta's new enterprise platform.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a media release Monday that the company was launching Meta Enterprise Platform to "start the next major pillar of our business" and help businesses use artificial intelligence to "grow and transform in new ways."

Desai will report directly to Zuckerberg, according to Meta.

Meta Enterprise Platform will focus on turning the company's AI stack into products and services that companies can deploy for their own businesses.

"Our goal is to make Meta the place enterprises come to scale their businesses. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to working with our customers along this journey," Desai said in Meta's media release.

Meta's new business-focused AI segment comes after the successful launch of Muse, the company's personal consumer AI agent.
