The Export-Import Bank of the United States has proposed up to $6 billion in financing for Argentina's landmark natural gas project, providing another show of support from the Trump administration as Argentinian President Milei seeks foreign investment. The state-owned energy company YPF SA, which is leading the project, stated on Wednesday that the project, called Argentina LNG, has received a financing proposal from the U.S. government credit agency. Italy's Eni and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) of the United Arab Emirates have also invested in the project, aiming to turn Argentina's Patagonia region's abundant shale gas resources into commercial value. These three companies are eager for banks like JPMorgan and Santander to provide a significant portion of the $24 billion in loans needed to build the required infrastructure, including processing plants, pipelines, and floating liquefaction facilities. This is a daunting task in Argentina. In the Milei era, financing for energy projects has been revived, but at a much smaller scale. The YPF CEO stated that partners will make a final investment decision in November, but this will likely depend on whether they can obtain letters of intent from banks and export credit agencies to secure the loan arrangements.
