BHP Allocates $8.25 Billion to Rio Doce Reparations

04:17 AM EDT, 09/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- BHP Group (BHP) said Wednesday that 42.11 billion Brazilian reais ($8.25 billion) have gone toward reparations under the Rio Doce agreement since November 2024. BHP said the funds have supported indemnities, financial aid, infrastructure, resettlement, environmental recovery, and public programs. The agreement provides for 170 billion reais in total funding over 20 years to address Samarco's Fundao dam collapse in 2015, the company said. Samarco carries out the restoration projects while owners BHP Brasil and Vale guarantee payments, BHP said. Overall spending on the recovery project has reached 80.39 billion reais since 2015, it added. Shares of the company were down 1.1% in Wednesday premarket activity.
