Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Advance Late Afternoon

03:52 PM EDT, 09/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks advanced late Tuesday afternoon with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) rising 1.1% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) gaining 0.3%. Redbook US same-store sales last week rose 7.6% from a year earlier after an 8.5% increase in the previous week. Redbook noted light traffic and soft weekend sales as the focus shifted to fall items. Apparel sales, usually the driver at this point in September, appear to have been depressed by warmer-than-normal weather, Redbook said. In corporate news, Capri (CPRI) has connected with investors potentially interested in buying the business, Women's Wear Daily reported. Capri shares jumped 6.6%. Lennar (LEN) shares gained 6.6% after Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) disclosed purchases of the homebuilder's stock. AutoZone (AZO) reported fiscal Q4 revenue and same-store sales growth below market expectations, though earnings topped estimates. The shares rose 4.5%. On (ONON) shares jumped 8.4% after the Swiss sportswear company outlined its midterm financial targets and growth strategy and reiterated its outlook for 2026. Shopify (SHOP) will incorporate Meta's (META) Muse agentic AI into its checkout options. Shopify shares climbed 7.6%.
