Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Advance Tuesday Afternoon

01:36 PM EDT, 09/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks advanced Tuesday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) rising 1.1% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) up 0.1%. Redbook US same-store sales rose by 7.6% from a year earlier in the week ended Sept. 19 after an 8.5% year-over-year increase in the previous week. Redbook noted light traffic and soft weekend sales as the focus shifted to fall items. Apparel sales, usually the driver at this point in September, appear to have been depressed by warmer-than-normal weather, Redbook said. In corporate news, AutoZone (AZO) reported fiscal Q4 revenue and same-store sales growth below market expectations on Tuesday amid a challenging environment, but the auto parts retailer's earnings topped estimates. Its shares rose 6.3%. On's (ONON) shares jumped nearly 9% after the Swiss sportswear company outlined its mid-term financial targets and growth strategy and reiterated its outlook for 2026. Shopify (SHOP) will incorporate Meta's (META) Muse agentic AI into its checkout options, Shopify CEO Tobias Lutke said in a post on X. Shopify shares surged 7.8%. GameStop (GME) shares climbed 5.8% after CEO Ryan Cohen disclosed a purchase of about 1.15 million GameStop shares at $22.94 per share, representing an investment of about $26.4 million.
