Canada's manufacturing sales in July fell by 0.4% month-on-month, missing expectations

  1. Canada's manufacturing sales in July decreased by 0.4% month-on-month to 78.7 billion CAD, compared to a 0.1% increase in June. Market expectations were for a 0.2% decrease.
  2. Sales declined in 8 out of 21 sub-sectors, with chemical products dropping 6.6%, serving as the main drag. Within its seven industry groups, sales decreased in six, notably in resins, synthetic rubber, and man-made fibers and filaments.
  3. Food manufacturing sales fell by 1.4%, mainly due to reduced sales in grain and oilseed milling. Sales of petroleum and coal products increased by 1.9%, driven by higher prices, partly reflecting renewed US-Iran tensions and concerns over crude oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz.
  4. Sales declined in six provinces, with Alberta down 2.7% and Manitoba down 7.7%. On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing sales rose by 10.9%.
