The Hungarian government announced it will provide HUF 20,000 (USD 64) per vehicle to hundreds of thousands of drivers by the end of the year, to help offset the impact of soaring fuel prices. Prime Minister Magyár stated in a social media post on Friday that a subsidy of HUF 5,000 per month, lasting until December, will be available to owners of around 1 million diesel vehicles with engines below 150 horsepower. He said: "We have chosen a form of support that helps those in need without causing fuel shortages or adding another HUF 50 billion to HUF 100 billion to the budget." Since Magyár’s new government lifted price controls in June, retail gasoline and diesel prices have floated freely, but the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed prices to a four-year high, prompting the opposition to urge government intervention again. He did not detail the cost of the measure, but if around 1 million vehicles are owned by 1 million individuals, the total cost would be about HUF 20 billion (USD 64 million).
