Jersey Mike's biggest customers are now from Gen X and baby boomers. The subs chain's CEO says that newer initiatives, such as more playful marketing and partnering with social-media influencers, are helping it land more Gen-Z customers.

The chain, known for its longstanding advertising deal with actor Danny DeVito, is now broadening its messaging to digital channels and introducing messages that work better with younger consumers, CEO Charlie Morrison said. Talking about the chain's recent $8.95 specials is helping too, he said.

"It's not that they don't like subs or they don't like Jersey Mike's. Our brand just hasn't been top of mind for them," Morrison said in an interview.

Jersey Mike's closed up 7.4% Wednesday after it reported growing sales and transactions in its first earnings report as a public company.
