Escalating US-Iran strikes heighten tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, driving oil prices and geopolitical premiums higher

  1. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Wednesday that it had launched ballistic missiles at a US military base in Jordan and attacked 10 ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This move is a direct retaliation for the US destroying five Iranian oil tankers earlier, marking a significant escalation in the military confrontation between both sides during a six-month-long war and breaking nearly a month of relative calm.
  2. The US Central Command released a strike video, stating this was in response to Iran's two previous ballistic missile attacks on US destroyers over the past two days. The US Secretary of State made it clear that every Iranian attack or attempted attack on US naval vessels would result in the loss of Iranian oil tankers. Jordan stated that its air defense systems intercepted 18 out of 20 missiles, with the remaining two falling in uninhabited areas, causing no casualties.
  3. The Iranian side claimed to have attacked two US ships and eight oil tankers in the Strait, and threatened to take action against oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports. Meanwhile, a liquefied natural gas carrier at the UAE's Khor Fakkan Port was reportedly damaged, but the perpetrator of the attack remains unclear. The security of this critical energy corridor has significantly deteriorated.
  4. Ongoing geopolitical conflicts continue to drive up risk premiums. Brent crude extended its gains in early Wednesday trading and approached $100 per barrel, as concerns over disruptions to tanker passage have become the main pricing factor. The market is closely watching the actual efficiency of the US convoy passage and whether Iran will expand its blockade of Gulf shipping. Any new military action could trigger a further spike in oil prices.
