Ethereum’s 2027 Upgrade Could Let Users Pay Gas Fees With Stablecoins

Ethereum is moving toward a major transaction redesign that could let users pay network fees without holding ETH. Developers have scheduled EIP-8141, called Frame Transactions, for the planned 2027 Hegotá upgrade.

The change could make Ethereum easier for mainstream users by allowing applications to handle gas payments. Consequently, users could spend stablecoins without first buying ETH for transaction fees.

Core developers scheduled EIP-8141 during the Aug. 27 All Core Developers Execution call. The proposal remains a draft, so developers could still change its technical design before deployment.

Moreover, Frame Transactions would separate transaction authorization, fee payment, and execution into programmable components. This structure could allow one account to initiate an action while another account covers its gas.

Significantly, a payments app could sponsor fees while accepting stablecoins from users. That model could simplify payments and reduce one of Ethereum’s longstanding usability hurdles.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, one of the proposal’s authors, highlighted recent progress on X. He said developers had quietly advanced the Frames design over recent months.

Additionally, the proposal could bring account abstraction features directly into Ethereum’s transaction system. Existing ERC-4337 infrastructure already supports sponsored transactions, but it relies on bundlers and separate UserOperations.
