Bitcoin Gains Strategic Foothold in the UAE's Economy

When you have the means to buy bitcoin and are convinced of its seriousness, you don’t hesitate to write a check and create favorable conditions for its growth. That’s exactly what the United Arab Emirates have done in recent months. The country, rich in oil, has officially recognized Bitcoin as a “new sector” of its economy. A declaration that is no coincidence: it prepares for the post-oil era. But the cannibalism between black gold and digital gold is just beginning.

In brief

  • The Emirati Prime Minister classified bitcoin as a new economic sector, marking a strategic turning point for an oil-rich country.
  • Standard Chartered, the first systemic bank, now offers spot trading in bitcoin and ether in the Emirates with a three-tier offer.
  • Sheikh Tahnoon, National Security Advisor, allegedly holds 49% of the structure behind the future Trump family crypto bank.
  • Despite non-oil growth, employment declines, and real capital lags political statements on crypto.

Oil finds its successor in the desert’s digital vault

The Prime Minister’s statement is not an electoral punchline. Classifying bitcoin and crypto as a “new sector” of the national economy, for a country that built its wealth on oil, is called changing your compass.

On X, the news spread in just a few hours, along with jokes and parody accounts: one compared oil to a currency unable to print itself, whereas bitcoin supposedly always knew how to do that.

More seriously, Mitchell Weijerman, a well-followed voice in the crypto community, goes straight to the point:

The key is not that oil money buys bitcoin. It is that an oil-rich economy now treats digital assets as a full-fledged economic sector. Countries no longer just regulate crypto; they compete for the industry.

The timing is no coincidence either: Standard Chartered launched its local crypto offer this very month.

Standard Chartered lays the tracks for the Gulf’s crypto economy

Standard Chartered hasn’t delayed. The British bank becomes the first systemic institution to offer spot trading in bitcoin and ether in the Emirates. Three steps over two years: custody since September 2024, USDC since last July, and now spot execution itself.

Nothing new in the mechanics; everything is new in the asset that is processed. The stock rose 1.8% over two sessions, with no client or volume figures. The bank keeps that to itself, and that is the problem: the product is visible, its economic model remains invisible.

Notably, American spot crypto ETFs captured $730 million the same day, their best session in nine months. Whether a coincidence or a true mirror effect between both sides of the Atlantic, only the future will tell.

The “spy sheikh,” Trump, and the money that speaks louder than words

The story turns significantly murkier with the Wall Street Journal revelations. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, National Security Advisor of the Emirates and brother of the president, nicknamed the “spy sheikh” across the Atlantic, allegedly holds 49% of WLTC Holdings, the structure overseeing the future Trump family crypto bank. Not a first attempt.

Tahnoon had already injected $500 million into World Liberty Financial in January 2025, of which $263 million was redirected to Trump entities. Since then, World Liberty secured conditional approval from the OCC to open a federal trust bank in the U.S.

At the same time, the Trump administration authorized the sale of AI chips to G42, an Emirati company controlled by Tahnoon himself, and loosened existing purchase ceilings. Over one year, Trump’s activities generated $59.5 million in foreign licensing revenues. World Liberty denies any conflict of interest. The timing of approvals speaks for itself and really needs no comment.

Oil stays on top — but Bitcoin is rattling the throne

Oil remains king, by far, despite all the current enthusiasm. The Prime Minister’s statement is certainly no farewell to black gold. The non-oil economy shows its best growth since 2024, driven by a sharply accelerating PMI index in August.

Employment, however, declines for the second time in three months, a first over a calendar year since 2021, according to economist S&P Global David Owen. Companies are scrambling to fulfill their own order books, which is never a very good sign.

On X, some see only a communications frenzy rather than a real shift of capital. The AI Therapist, a well-followed account for its biting irony, is blunt:

Treating BTC as a sector, for the Emirates, is the financial equivalent of putting crypto on a business card. It’s not adoption yet, it’s just a nice interior decoration for oil money.

Hard to disagree with him on that one.

What to remember about the Emirates’ crypto strategy

  • The bitcoin price was trading around $79,717 at the time of writing, slightly up on the week.
  • The Emirati Prime Minister classified bitcoin and crypto as a “new sector” of the national economy.
  • Standard Chartered becomes the first systemic bank to offer spot trading in bitcoin and ether in the country.
  • Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed allegedly holds 49% of the structure behind the future Trump family crypto bank.
  • Emirati employment declined for the second time in three months, despite the best non-oil growth since 2024.

While the Emirates bet on bitcoin, Ethereum quietly charts its course. A key adoption indicator just hit an unprecedented record. Major institutions are now also looking at altcoins. The battle for digital supremacy is only just beginning.
