U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated on Wednesday that the Trump administration is considering a new round of import tariffs on semiconductors, which may further increase tariffs on foreign chips to attract more semiconductor manufacturing to the United States. However, these tariffs may be implemented in conjunction with tariff reduction measures for companies investing in U.S. domestic manufacturing, following the previous approach taken by the Trump administration in the pharmaceutical industry. Raimondo said: "This is the principle the semiconductor industry should follow: if you manufacture in the United States, we will grant you tariff reductions; if you do not manufacture in the United States, you will pay tariffs. This is a very sensible and effective approach." Previously, Trump had already imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced semiconductors and, after the U.S. Department of Commerce completed its related trade investigation, ordered an increase in import tariffs on these chips in January this year. However, the scope of the new round of tariffs may expand from semiconductors themselves to products containing chips, thereby affecting imports of data center servers and consumer electronics.
