Bitcoin falls to $76,762 as US military strikes Iran, Strategy buys 4,603 BTC

The cryptocurrency market experienced heightened volatility on Tuesday after the United States launched airstrikes on sites associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Bitcoin’s price immediately slumped, dropping to $76,762 and piercing key support levels at $78,000 and $77,000 in quick succession.

US military action triggers market turmoil

The US Central Command confirmed that American forces carried out coordinated strikes on IRGC installations alleged to be involved with naval mine operations near the crucial Strait of Hormuz. The offensive began at noon Eastern Time, sparking a swift escalation in tensions across the region.

Media outlets linked to Iran reported explosions at several sites, including Qeshm Island, the port of Bandar Abbas, and the city of Chabahar. An IRGC spokesperson, quoted by the Fars news agency, warned the US that it “will regret its new attacks.”

President Donald Trump described the operation as “large and powerful,” warning that any Iranian retaliation would result in a “much harder and higher level” of US response. Shortly afterward, Iranian forces reportedly fired ballistic missiles at Camp Titin in Jordan, a US Marine facility. Jordanian officials said their air defense systems intercepted eight missiles, averting damage.

Crypto and traditional markets slide

The conflict’s rapid escalation prompted a sharp reaction across risk assets. Leading cryptocurrency analyst Nebraskangooner stated that, following August’s price candle close, Bitcoin may have established a bottom in this correction if the $73,500 support zone holds. If prices fall below this level, the bullish outlook could be invalidated, while a rebound might target $87,000 and $97,000.

Nebraskangooner emphasized the significance of the $73.5k support line, noting, “So that is the invalidation line for bull thesis. Potential for $87k and $97k if bottom support holds true.”

Ethereum also came under selling pressure, briefly falling below the $2,400 mark. According to data from Coinglass, leveraged traders were hit with $115 million in long position liquidations within just one hour. Across global equities, the S&P 500 tumbled to its lowest level since August 4 as Treasury yields climbed, reflecting growing uncertainty over inflation and fiscal policies.

Rising expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September added to market turmoil, especially after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivered hawkish remarks at the latest Jackson Hole economic symposium.

Energy prices jump, tankers reportedly hit

Oil markets rallied amid concerns about potential disruptions to Middle East shipping lanes. Brent crude prices rose toward $93 per barrel on fears of restricted movement in the Strait of Hormuz, while West Texas Intermediate advanced toward $90.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that two commercial tankers were damaged near the strait’s exit, further heightening anxieties about global energy supply. Iranian officials warned that ongoing pressure on the region could jeopardize Persian Gulf oil exports.

This surge in energy and geopolitical risk arrived just a day after Bitcoin recorded its strongest monthly gain since November 2024, climbing approximately 25% during August.
