Amkor Technology an Underappreciated Beneficiary of Rising Semiconductor Packaging Complexity, BofA Says

MT newswireMT newswire2026/08/27 14:47
10:47 AM EDT, 08/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Amkor Technology (AMKR) is an underappreciated beneficiary of rising semiconductor packaging complexity, AI-related packaging demand and US supply-chain regionalization, BofA Securities said in a Thursday note. Although the company remains a capital-intensive provider of outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing, markets are not fully reflecting its mix shift towards advanced products, growing role in its 2.5D 3D IC packaging offerings, as well as the long-term strategic value of its upcoming Arizona facility, the analysts wrote. Longer planning horizons amid earlier engagement in the design cycle, client prepayments and capacity investments should improve visibility into loading and also support utilization and subsequently ramp operating leverage, the note said. The brokerage said it expects EPS to reach $3.41 in 2028 from $1.51 in 2025, as mix and utilization improve. BofA initiated coverage of the stock with a buy rating and a price target of $70 per share. Price: 51.67, Change: +3.27, Percent Change: +6.75

Last week, retail investors poured $6.1 billion into 3x leveraged chip ETFs, but suffered a 20.5% single-day plunge this Thursday, almost perfectly coinciding with the start of the rapid downturn. The cumulative decline in October has exceeded 43%, far surpassing the 15.9% loss of non-leveraged products during the same period. The root cause lies in the market’s skepticism toward AI investment returns. The most significant uncertainty is whether aggressive spending by tech giants will actually deliver on profit expectations, while the use of leverage has exponentially magnified the cost of this misjudgment.
