Is Altcoin Season Here? Ether Outpaces Bitcoin as BTC Dominance Holds Firm

That momentum was also visible across broader market gauges. TradingView’s OTHERS index gained about 19% over seven days on Aug. 26, while TOTAL3, which excludes Bitcoin and Ether, advanced roughly 15%.

However, the OTHERS-to-Bitcoin ratio fell about 1.9% during the week, showing that much of the rebound still occurred within a BTC-led market. That distinction matters as rising dollar prices alone do not establish altcoin season. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index remained at 37 out of 100.

The platform defines altcoin season when 75% of eligible top-100 coins outperform Bitcoin over 90 days, a threshold current market breadth has not reached. The contrast leaves the market in a transition phase, with breadth improving faster than relative performance against the largest cryptocurrency for now.

Bitcoin remained the largest force in the market, with dominance near 59.7% and a weekly price gain of about 23%. BTC traded around $78,200 to $79,300 on Wednesday after briefly moving above $80,000, while U.S. spot ETFs recorded $314 million in Tuesday inflows.

Those inflows pushed August totals above $3 billion, reinforcing the scale of demand supporting the market’s leading asset. Price structure also keeps attention on the $80,000 level, which remains immediate resistance, followed by $82,000 and $85,000.

A sustained hold above the earlier $76,000 breakout zone would preserve the current structure, while $73,000 marks the deeper level tied to the Aug. 20 breakout. As long as dominance stays close to 60%, smaller tokens remain dependent on whether capital begins rotating away from Bitcoin rather than simply rising alongside it.

Ethereum, on the other hand, provided the clearest evidence of improving rotation. ETH traded near $2,456 after gaining almost 29% in seven days, outperforming Bitcoin’s weekly advance.

The ETH/BTC ratio also climbed near 0.0313 and reached roughly 0.0321 during the week, showing stronger relative performance against the market leader. CoinMarketCap identifies stronger Ethereum performance as a common stage before capital spreads further into smaller cryptocurrencies.

Even so, the market has not crossed the platform’s formal altcoin-season threshold, and Bitcoin still controls nearly three-fifths of total capitalization. Ethereum’s immediate test sits near $2,500, while $2,250 remains the level associated with last week’s breakout.

The data therefore points to early rotation rather than a completed market shift. Smaller assets are recovering, and Ethereum is leading Bitcoin on weekly performance.

However, BTC dominance remains the deciding constraint. A confirmed altcoin season would require broader relative outperformance, not only stronger dollar gains across smaller tokens.

August CPI "hot" just right? Wall Street intensively bets on Fed rate hike next week, Waller can't cry wolf this time

New "Fed News Agency" analyzes CPI: Core inflation has cooled annually, but short-term trends are picking up again. After the CPI release, at least two institutions that previously expected the Federal Reserve to keep rates unchanged next week have now shifted to expecting a rate hike. While Wall Street does not necessarily believe U.S. inflation is out of control again, more market participants think that, with disinflation stalling and oil prices rising again, the Fed needs to implement a precautionary rate hike as a policy adjustment. Divergence among institutions is emerging: will the rate hike in September be a precautionary move, or the start of a new tightening cycle? Whether there will be another hike in December remains a new suspense.

Saudi Arabia's key oil pipeline attacked on Thursday, sharp decline in Red Sea shipping through Bab-el-Mandeb; Houthi rebels claim to have captured 5,400 square kilometers in 9 days

According to American media, the attacked pipeline is responsible for transporting crude oil between Saudi Arabia’s eastern oil fields and export facilities on the Red Sea coast. Its core function is to help Saudi Arabia bypass the Strait of Hormuz for oil exports. According to data from Saudi industry media, only six vessels passed through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait on Thursday, a significant drop from 30 vessels on the 9th. The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that next Monday, Iran, Iraq, and other Gulf countries will meet in Oman to discuss the establishment of a secure commercial shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz.
