DeFi yield sources examined amid spring market breakdown

For years, DeFi’s pitch was simple: park your crypto somewhere, earn yield that makes your savings account look like a piggy bank. But when spring 2026 hit, that pitch ran headfirst into reality. Yields compressed, liquidity dried up, and the total value locked in liquid staking tokens cratered by more than 66% in a matter of months.

The anatomy of a DeFi yield

DeFi yields come from a handful of concrete economic activities. The most straightforward source is lending. Protocols like Aave, Compound, and Morpho match lenders with borrowers, and the interest borrowers pay flows back to depositors.

Then there are automated market maker (AMM) swap fees. When you provide liquidity to pools on Curve or Uniswap, you earn a cut of every trade that passes through. More trading volume means more fees. Less volume means you’re sitting in a pool earning next to nothing while exposed to impermanent loss.

Proof-of-stake rewards represent another yield layer. Ethereum validators earn rewards for securing the network, and liquid staking protocols let users access those rewards without locking up their ETH directly. This spawned the liquid staking token boom that peaked in late 2025.

Beyond these, delta-neutral strategies and real-world asset (RWA) backed returns have emerged as newer yield sources. Ethena’s sUSDe product uses delta-neutral positioning to generate returns, while MakerDAO’s Spark protocol channels yields from real-world lending activity back to depositors.

Finally, there’s token emissions. Protocols print their own governance tokens and distribute them to liquidity providers as incentives. This was the engine behind DeFi Summer and its many sequels.

What broke this spring

Borrowing demand declined substantially in spring 2026. When fewer people want to borrow, interest rates fall, and the returns available to lenders shrink accordingly.

Perpetual funding rates, which had been a reliable yield source during bullish periods, normalized. During high-conviction rallies, traders pay elevated funding rates to hold leveraged long positions. When conviction fades, those payments dry up, taking delta-neutral strategy yields with them.

The liquid staking sector took the hardest hit by the numbers. LST total value locked peaked at roughly $89 billion in late 2025. By June 2026, it had plummeted to $30 billion, a two-year low.

Staked-stablecoin APYs, which had spiked during the exuberance of 2024 and 2025, settled into a 7-12% range.

Emission-driven versus usage-driven returns

Emission-driven farming follows a predictable lifecycle. A protocol launches, distributes governance tokens to early depositors, TVL surges, yields look incredible, and then the token price declines as recipients sell. The APY drops, depositors leave, and the protocol is left trying to build genuine utility from a smaller base.

The protocols that weathered spring 2026 most effectively were usage-driven. Prominent platforms offering yield through genuine activity, including Aave, Compound, Morpho, Curve, Uniswap, MakerDAO/Spark, and yield aggregators like Yearn and Beefy, continued targeting stablecoin strategies in the 3-15% APY range.

Ethena’s sUSDe product occupies an interesting middle ground. Its returns depend on market conditions, specifically the funding rate environment, rather than token emissions. When funding rates are favorable, yields are attractive. When they normalize, as they did this spring, the product’s appeal diminishes, but it doesn’t collapse in the way emission-dependent protocols often do.

Moody's announced it will maintain France's Aa3 rating, stating that France's diversified economic structure and robust public institutions support the current rating. However, the outlook remains negative because political instability will continue to constrain fiscal consolidation efforts. Moody's added that the maintenance of the Aa3 rating is based on the assumption that France will ultimately implement a deficit reduction plan, and expects "financing costs and social tensions will ease in the coming months."
