  1. India's benchmark stock indices closed modestly lower on Friday, as oil prices were boosted by news that the US may indefinitely maintain a maritime blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, reigniting concerns over energy supply and inflation, with risk-off sentiment weighing on risk asset performance.
  2. Sensex fell by 71 points to 78,009 points, while Nifty closed down about 30 points at 24,366 points. On the technical front, the index traded mostly below the 24,400 area, but notable buying interest emerged around 24,300. An attempted rebound in the second half briefly pushed Nifty to an intraday high of 24,405, before encountering selling pressure that reflected the persistence of resistance above.
  3. The short-term support range is set at 24,300–24,250. Analysts believe that as long as this area holds, downside potential remains limited for now. However, risk appetite is subdued overall, as persistently high oil prices directly worsen the outlook for imported inflation in one of the world's largest crude oil importers. Uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz further dampens willingness to chase gains.
  4. Sector performance was mixed, with the Nifty Consumer Durables Index gaining nearly 1% against the broader trend, driven by buying in selected discretionary stocks. The Nifty Pharma and Real Estate Indices, however, led the declines, making them the day's weakest sectors.
  5. The broader market also came under pressure, with the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices falling by about 0.5% and 0.7% respectively, indicating weaker sentiment among small and mid-caps and a shift of funds towards large-cap defensive names.
  6. Despite limited index declines, investors focused on the potential impact of the Middle East situation on the global energy market. A steady rupee exchange rate, a mild pullback in India's 10-year government bond yield, and a gradual improvement in foreign participation are providing some buffer to the domestic macro environment and supporting the inflation trajectory. The subsequent market trend will depend on whether geopolitical risks escalate further and whether oil prices remain elevated.
