SK Hynix’s performance surges in the first half of the year, with employee compensation and R&D investment soaring simultaneously

In the first half of 2026, SK Hynix employees had an average salary of 144 million Korean won, up 23% year-on-year; during the same period, the CEO's half-year salary was 26.1 billion Korean won.
The company's total operating income for the first half was 131.90 trillion Korean won (approximately 629.3 billion yuan), a staggering 230.8% increase compared to the previous year; net profit attributable to shareholders was 134.15 trillion Korean won (approximately 640 billion yuan), surging 788.16%; gross margin reached 81.63%, an increase of 26.24 percentage points year-on-year.
R&D expenditure reached 6.04 trillion Korean won (approximately 28.8 billion yuan), already accounting for 90% of the total for last year. Most was expensed during the period, with a small portion capitalized as intangible assets. R&D was focused on HBM4, next-generation DRAM, high-capacity DDR5, 321-layer NAND, and enterprise-class SSDs in the AI/HPC sector. Capital expenditure on tangible assets for the period was 17.59 trillion Korean won (approximately 83.9 billion yuan), with domestic and overseas plant utilization rates maintained at 100%; customer concentration increased, with two customers accounting for 13.35% and 13.03% of revenue respectively. Industry analysis points to Nvidia as the top customer, contributing around 17 trillion Korean won in sales, roughly 13% of total revenue.
