Canadian building permits in June surged by 18.5% month-on-month to CAD 14.9 billion, marking a strong rebound from the 1.7% decline in May and far exceeding the market expectation of a 0.8% increase, reaching the highest reading in over two years.
The value of non-residential building permits rose by CAD 1.8 billion to CAD 6.8 billion, mainly driven by institutional buildings (up CAD 1.5 billion to CAD 3.2 billion), with industrial and commercial permits also increasing by CAD 268.8 million and CAD 67.9 million respectively.
Residential building intentions climbed by CAD 479.7 million (up 6.3%) to CAD 8.1 billion, with multi-unit projects up by CAD 283.7 million to CAD 5.3 billion, and single-family dwellings up by CAD 196 million to CAD 2.8 billion.
In the second quarter of 2026, the total value of building permits grew by 3.7% quarter-on-quarter to CAD 40.4 billion.
