- Analysts point out that the easing of inflationary pressure in July was partly due to a month-on-month decline of about 2.9% in gasoline prices and about 1.7% in fuel oil prices, with falling energy costs dragging down overall CPI.
- The moderate movement in energy prices from June to July was a key contributor to the improvement in inflation readings. Previously, the US-Iran ceasefire agreement had led to a sharp drop in oil prices, providing a foundation for a temporary cooling.
- However, this situation may change in August. Since late July, tensions in the Middle East have risen again, causing a significant rebound in oil prices. Gasoline prices are highly likely to rise month-on-month in August, turning energy items from a drag on inflation into an upward driver.
- Energy price volatility is highly transmissible, not only directly impacting CPI readings but also spreading through transportation costs into a wider range of goods and services prices. Its subsequent developments are crucial for the overall inflation trajectory.
- For the Federal Reserve, the contribution of energy in the July data is considered a passive input; policymakers focus more on core inflation trends. However, if headline CPI rises markedly in August due to an energy rebound, it could partially affect market narratives regarding the inflation outlook.
- Going forward, attention should be paid to weekly changes in gasoline retail prices in August and whether crude oil prices stabilize at current levels or continue to rise. This will determine whether July's energy dividend can be sustained or is merely a temporary respite in the disinflation process.
