South Korea’s presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik announced on Monday that the government will establish a new semiconductor fund with a scale of 5 trillion won (approximately $3.52 billion), focusing investment on chip materials, components, and fabless companies as a key part of the national chip cluster development plan.
The government will also provide an equal amount of trade financing support to assist export-oriented semiconductor suppliers, aiming to strengthen the resilience of the domestic industrial chain within the global supply network.
Kang also noted that within this year, efforts will be made to promote the legislation of the “Law on Super Large Special Industrial Parks”, which aims to simplify the approval process, environmental assessments, and infrastructure construction procedures for relevant zones, thereby removing administrative obstacles for the industry.
Regarding infrastructure, the government plans to ensure a water supply of 650 thousand tons for semiconductor projects in the Honam region by 2030. Meanwhile, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is scheduled to receive a planned power supply of 14.7 billion watts by 2041.
Overall, the announcement covers multifaceted measures including funding support, trade financing, legislative promotion, and infrastructure guarantees, reflecting South Korea's ongoing strategic intention to further strengthen its position in semiconductor manufacturing and core materials.
