Micron management sends strong signals: System value of storage exceeds 50%, CPU-side AI agent demand is in "preseason warm-up"
During the FMS 2026 Flash Summit, Deutsche Bank held discussions with Micron's management. Micron pointed out that AI is permanently reshaping the storage industry into a core part of system architecture, and both DRAM and NAND are currently in supply shortage. The value proportion of memory systems has risen to nearly 50%, and AI is accelerating the revaluation process. Deutsche Bank believes Micron has a "luxury advantage," enabling it to achieve growth without sacrificing profitability, which is expected to drive strong earnings upgrades and a valuation re-rating.

According to ChaseWind Trading Desk, on August 6th, Deutsche Bank held an in-depth meeting with Micron's management during the FMS 2026 Flash Memory Summit. Participants included Jeremy Werner, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Core Data Center Business, as well as Satya Kumar, Vice President of Investor Relations and Finance.
After the meeting, Deutsche Bank analyst Melissa Weathers published a research report citing Micron management’s perspective: The memory industry is no longer an ordinary cyclical sector; AI is permanently reshaping it into the core value of system architecture.
She believes that Micron, with its full-stack technical lead from HBM to storage and strict execution discipline, has the "luxury conditions" to achieve growth without sacrificing profitability. This positions the company to drive strong upward profit forecast revisions as well as a re-rating of its valuation.
Structurally Tight Supply-Demand Dynamics, Contract Mechanisms Smooth Out Volatility
Micron’s management emphasized during the meeting that both DRAM and NAND are currently experiencing supply shortages relative to demand. The emergence of AI and the rising ratio of storage and computing power have caused this cycle’s imbalance to be more pronounced than in previous cycles.
Additionally, when supply tightens, customers usually prioritize decreasing storage capacity rather than core memory. This is because SSDs can be hot-swapped after the fact, whereas upgrading memory requires physical disassembly of the system.
This usage characteristic makes memory demand in AI systems more inelastic, with lower price elasticity than the market usually expects.
On supply management, the leadership revealed that Strategic Customer Agreements (SCAs) are expected to cover around 40% of sales volume. These agreements exchange commitments on duration and supply volume for agreed price caps and floors, helping both parties improve production planning and reducing the severity of shortage shocks industry-wide.
Deutsche Bank believes these structural aspects make current supply-demand constraints in this storage cycle more severe than historical norms, in line with management’s assessment, and it maintains a "very positive" view on the overall storage cycle.
The Value Share of Memory Systems Is Underestimated; AI Accelerates the Revaluation Process
The report, quoting Micron management, points out that the share of memory in total system value has risen from about 10% thirty years ago to nearly 50% today, and AI is accelerating this decades-long revaluation process.
The analyst uses KV cache management as a technical example of this trend. If KV cache is mishandled, GPUs are forced to recalculate existing results instead of advancing new tasks, artificially boosting utilization rates without yielding meaningful output.
To solve this problem, Micron adopts a multilayered cross-storage hierarchy approach: HBM handles hot-path computing, SOCAMM2 main memory manages KV overflow, decentralized DDR5 resource pools cover long-tail demand, with orchestration software managing data eviction and recall.
Melissa Weathers notes in her report that she continues to track one key variable: As the context window expands, will single-GPU memory intensity continue to grow, or will advances in KV cache orchestration software be efficient enough to absorb some incremental memory needs through software optimization?
The report also records an emerging demand signal worthy of investor attention.
Micron’s management stressed that hyperscale cloud providers’ capital expenditures have previously been highly concentrated on GPU infrastructure, but as the workload shifts from human-driven to agent-driven (with significantly higher computation call intensity), historic underinvestment on the CPU side is now being addressed.
Nevertheless, management remains cautious at this stage, describing the adoption process for agent resources as a "preseason warm-up," with mass deployment still some distance off and currently limited to the most technologically advanced leading players.
Deutsche Bank views the rise of CPU demand as an "incremental pillar" supporting AI-driven storage demand, believing this trend opens up new incremental opportunities for Micron beyond the GPU ecosystem.
Emerging Storage Solutions Receive Attention; Substitute Competition Threats Remain Limited
At the FMS 2026 industry conference, investors paid close attention to disruptive storage technologies that may break through the "memory wall."
With high DRAM prices, inference-stage workloads that require bandwidth but minimal memory footprint are increasingly shifting toward SRAM.
Micron’s management estimates that currently about 5% of systems run such specific workloads. However, SRAM’s scalability is inferior to DRAM, determining that it can only exist as an on-chip solution and cannot substitute for HBM.
Additionally, CXL (Compute Express Link) and HBF (High Bandwidth Fabric) technologies were widely discussed during the event, but Micron believes there is still debate regarding their practical value and commercialization prospects.
Deutsche Bank believes that SRAM represents a new niche tier within the memory hierarchy and has not yet caused disruptive impact on the existing HBM pattern, posing only a limited competitive threat to Micron’s core storage business.
Deutsche Bank: Micron Combines Growth and Profitability; Reiterates Buy Recommendation
Based on these judgments, Deutsche Bank maintains its buy rating on Micron Technology.
The report believes Micron's strong product portfolio, continuously evolving business model, and extremely favorable supply-demand environment together are likely to drive stronger upward profit forecast revisions and a revaluation of the company.
Melissa Weathers notes in particular that Micron currently enjoys a "luxury advantage," being able to achieve growth without sacrificing profitability, and lists full-stack technical leadership and execution discipline as the company’s core differentiators against competitors.
