One of the country's largest mortgage originators is in hot water.

Shares of the parent company of United Wholesale Mortgage fell 35% to an all-time low on Thursday, after the company reported a steep loss in the second quarter, suspended its dividend and announced a new capital infusion.

UWM Holdings swung to a loss because a large interest-rate hedge fell in value by about $600 million. It had taken the large hedge position in anticipation of an acquisition of another mortgage-servicer, Two Harbors Investment. That deal fell through earlier this year.

Oaktree Capital Management, as well as billionaire CEO Mat Ishbia's own family office, will combine on a $2.05 billion equity capital investment.
