Thai Baht: Geopolitical tensions test BOT's position – DBS
Thailand’s Financial Markets Face Mounting Challenges
According to DBS Group Research economist Chua Han Teng, Thailand’s financial landscape—including the Thai Baht (THB) and stock market—is experiencing significant strain. This pressure is largely attributed to the country’s sensitivity to commodity price shocks stemming from ongoing Middle East conflicts. The analysis suggests that inflation risks linked to the Iran war have likely eliminated the possibility of further monetary policy easing by the Bank of Thailand (BoT), with current market expectations pointing to a stable policy rate for at least half a year.
Thai Baht Weakens Amid Limited Policy Options
Recently, the Thai Baht has emerged as the weakest currency among the ASEAN-6, depreciating by 5.3% so far this month. Simultaneously, Thailand’s main equity index has dropped by 5.8%. This underperformance highlights the nation’s acute exposure to disruptions in global commodities caused by Middle Eastern tensions. Without a credible reduction in geopolitical risks, these downward trends in the financial markets are expected to persist.
The economic fallout from the Middle East crisis has created a stagflation scenario in Thailand, presenting a complex challenge for the BoT. The central bank, like many others worldwide, is closely monitoring the unpredictable nature and duration of supply shocks triggered by the Iran conflict. Rising inflationary pressures have likely removed the option for further rate cuts, even as the economy struggles and credit growth remains subdued.
After lowering its policy rate to 1.00% in February, the BoT is expected to maintain its current stance for the foreseeable future. The central bank is likely to observe whether inflationary pressures extend beyond energy and fertilizer costs, potentially fueling broader inflation expectations and secondary effects.
Market participants in Thailand’s fixed income sector anticipate that the policy rate will remain unchanged for at least the next six months. However, if commodity prices stay high due to a prolonged Iran conflict, expectations for a possible rate hike by the BoT could intensify.
