Crypto super PAC launches $1.5 million effort to unseat Al Green in Texas Democratic primary

A crypto-aligned super PAC said Wednesday it will spend $1.5 million to oppose Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) in next month’s Democratic primary, in one of the first major midterm spending moves by the digital asset industry.

Protect Progress, a federal super PAC affiliated with crypto political group Fairshake, said it plans to fund advertising and voter outreach aimed at defeating Green, a longtime member of the House Financial Services Committee who has repeatedly voted against major crypto market structure and stablecoin bills.

The group cited Green’s opposition to legislation including the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act, which died without becoming law, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act currently under consideration, and the GENIUS stablecoin bill that passed this summer. The PAC also noted Green's support for maintaining the SEC’s Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, which limited how banks could custody digital assets.

“As a member of the Financial Services Committee, Representative Al Green has decided to try and stop American innovation in its tracks,” Fairshake spokesperson Josh Vlasto said in a statement announcing the effort.

Green, who has served in Congress since 2005, has long expressed skepticism toward cryptocurrency, previously warning that digital assets could threaten the U.S. dollar’s global role and questioning the industry’s economic and environmental impact.

During a House hearing last year, he dismissed claims that regulators had deliberately pushed banks to cut ties with crypto firms, and said that “Operation Choke Point 2.0” was a “made-up statement."

Subsequent congressional investigations and lawsuits by industry participants later brought renewed attention to claims that banks had faced regulatory pressure when dealing with crypto companies.

Green is currently running in a reshaped Houston-area district following Texas redistricting. He faces Democratic challenger Christian Menefee, who recently won a special election and has received favorable marks from crypto industry advocacy groups.

Fairshake funding

The spending push signals how aggressively crypto-backed political groups intend to operate ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Fairshake and affiliated committees reported holding roughly $193 million in cash earlier this year after heavy fundraising from firms including Coinbase, Ripple, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

Fairshake and allied groups spent tens of millions backing pro-crypto candidates in the 2024 election cycle and have said they plan to support candidates who favor clearer digital asset regulation while opposing lawmakers seen as hostile to the industry.

Deutsche Bank, which "accurately called the top" two weeks ago: Tech stocks need to "fall another 5%" to reach the "long-term trend bottom"

After Deutsche Bank downgraded its rating on US tech and large-cap growth stocks two weeks ago, tech stocks have underperformed the rest of the S&P 500 components by 12 percentage points. However, Deutsche Bank noted that tech stocks still have about 5 percentage points of downside before reaching the bottom of their long-term trend channel. Institutional positions have been quickly cooling, and signs of outflows from the $30 billion bottom-fishing funds are beginning to appear. Going forward, earnings performance, capital flows, and external risks will determine whether the adjustment stops at structural rotation.
