Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6, 2025, after months of speculation and increasing calls from members of Parliament for him to step down.

During the announcement, Trudeau explained that he would step down once a successor was chosen through a "robust, nationwide, competitive process" led by the Liberal Party.

This move follows a period of internal political tension, including a notable disagreement with Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who also announced her resignation in December 2024, citing differences with Trudeau over economic policies.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau stated.

The resignation announcement came as political betting activity surged on the Polymarket platform, which allows users to place wagers on political events.

Prior to Trudeau’s official resignation, Polymarket users had been betting on the likelihood of him stepping down, with the odds of his resignation steadily rising.

In fact, users had already predicted that Trudeau would announce his resignation by the end of January 6.

Additionally, Polymarket users were placing bets on the possible future prime minister, with Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre receiving the highest odds.

Polymarket has recently seen an increase in political bets, especially concerning Canadian politics and U.S. election outcomes.

However, there have been concerns regarding the influence of large investors, or "whales," on the betting odds.

Trudeau’s decision to resign follows years of political controversy, particularly his handling of the 2022 trucker protests in Ottawa, where he invoked the Emergencies Act to freeze protester bank accounts, including those used for cryptocurrency transactions.
