$YGG TL;DR:
THORChain now directs 20% of System Income to Protocol-Owned Liquidity while cutting the RUNE burn from 5% to 1% under its revised distribution model.
POL deploys protocol-owned RUNE into eligible pools, prioritizing markets where deeper liquidity can improve swap execution, support volume and generate more network income.
The change reduces permanent token destruction but keeps more RUNE working inside THORChain, shifting its economics toward liquidity growth and long-term trading infrastructure.
THORChain has changed how System Income is distributed, directing 20% of network revenue into Protocol-Owned Liquidity while reducing the RUNE burn from 5% to 1%. In its official breakdown, the protocol said the new allocation gives POL a larger role in its economic model. The shift moves value away from permanent token destruction and toward liquidity that THORChain itself owns and can deploy across its pools. Under the revised split, 59% goes to Nodes, 20% to POL, 10% to TCY, 5% to the Developer Fund, 5% to the Marketing Fund and 1% to the RUNE burn.
THORChain Prioritizes Productive Liquidity Over Token Burns
Protocol-Owned Liquidity allows THORChain to convert part of its swap-generated income into RUNE that can be deployed into eligible liquidity pools. Every three days, the network reassesses pools based on fee generation relative to liquidity depth and directs new POL toward the highest-scoring market. The goal is to deepen liquidity where it can improve execution most, creating a flywheel between stronger pools, more swap volume and additional System Income. The mechanism builds on the POL framework introduced through v3.20, when governance controls for allocations and eligible assets became operational.
The lower burn changes how THORChain treats RUNE generated through network activity. Rather than destroying 5% of System Income, the protocol now burns only 1%, freeing more revenue for liquidity deployment. THORChain is effectively choosing productive use of RUNE over a larger deflationary mechanism, while still reducing liquid market supply because tokens assigned to POL are placed inside protocol-controlled pools. That means RUNE is no longer removed permanently at the same pace, but a larger share is locked into infrastructure intended to support trading depth and future network activity.
The adjustment gives POL a structural role in THORChain’s long-term economics rather than treating it as a secondary experiment. Deeper pools can reduce price impact on larger swaps, improve execution quality and expand the network’s capacity to absorb additional volume. The new distribution ties THORChain’s revenue more directly to the liquidity needed to generate future revenue. That approach was already visible in the network’s August activity, when POL began accumulating protocol-controlled positions. The trade-off is clear: less RUNE is permanently burned, but more network income is recycled into liquidity that could strengthen THORChain’s trading infrastructure over time at scale.

$BTC TL;DR
THORChain recorded $613M in August swap volume, down 23% from July’s $796.97M.
Active wallets climbed 57% to 23.5K, while 21.8K new wallets joined the network.
Protocol-owned liquidity went live through v3.20, directing 20% of system income into protocol-controlled positions.
THORChain closed August with $613M in swap volume, marking a 23% decline from July’s $796.97M. The drop, however, came without the unusually large daily spike that boosted July, when a single $75M session significantly lifted the monthly figure.
User activity moved in the opposite direction. Active wallets reached 23.5K, up 57% month over month, while 21.8K new wallets joined during August. That brought total unique wallets to more than 1.13 million, suggesting that network participation continued expanding even as aggregate trading volume cooled.
THORChain Activity Becomes More Distributed
August’s volume developed more evenly across the month. Daily activity reached roughly $40M around August 20–21 before falling sharply on August 26–27 following a network halt linked to a node execution mismatch. THORChain recovered quickly, with daily volume returning to approximately $30M–$34M during the final 2 days.
Rapid swaps also showed stronger usage frequency. The segment processed $35.1M across roughly 28K trades, compared with $28.5M and 7.5K trades in July. The average transaction size fell from about $3.8K to $1.3K, indicating more frequent smaller transactions.
System income reached $615K, compared with $922K in July. Dynamic fees remained below the standard 10-basis-point fixed rate for much of the month, while the ShapeShift pilot generated $217.58 from $487.8K in routed volume.
Protocol-Owned Liquidity Adds A New Layer
The launch of Protocol Owned Liquidity under v3.20 represents one of August’s most significant structural changes. The mechanism directs 20% of system income toward liquidity positions controlled by the protocol instead of distributing that portion externally.
Within its first 3 days, POL accumulated $19.09K in positions from 39.89K RUNE deployed. The initial position was established in the TRON.USDT pool, where THORChain held an 8.672% share.
RUNE also continued generating a higher yield than TCY. Its 7-day APR moved between 9% and 22% during the month, while TCY remained between 2% and 5%.
August therefore presented a mixed but constructive picture. Trading volume normalized after July’s exceptional surge, while wallet growth, rapid-swap activity and protocol-owned liquidity pointed to continued development across the network.

Altcoin Market Check: Big Winners, Heavy Losers, and Aggressive Rotation
Today's board shows exactly how selective the altcoin market has become.
On one side, MAGMA is leading with +36.14%, followed by CUDIS at +29.86% and LIGHT at +25.66%. BLUAI and AEON are also positive, showing that buyers are still willing to take risks in selected projects.
On the other side, the selling is just as aggressive. GAIA is down -30.40%, TUT -29.08%, COLLECT -18.05%, followed by CYS and RUNE with significant losses.
The important takeaway is that liquidity hasn't disappeared. It is simply moving fast.
This is a market where being in the right coin matters more than simply being exposed to altcoins. Strong projects can rally 20% to 30% while another token loses the same amount during the same session.
For traders, the next question is simple: will today's winners hold their strength, or become tomorrow's losers?
I would watch MAGMA, CUDIS and LIGHT for follow-through. If they consolidate near current levels instead of immediately dumping, that could signal genuine demand.
Meanwhile, GAIA, TUT and COLLECT need to establish support before calling any potential bottom.
This is not a broad altcoin rally. It's an aggressive battle for liquidity, and capital is moving toward momentum.
