Quarterly Revenue Hits 16.8 Billion for IPO Push—Can Anthropic’s Profits Support a $2 Trillion Valuation?

Anthropic disclosed Q3 revenue of $16.8 billion and achieved adjusted profitability. Compared to OpenAI's expectations and projected massive losses in 2025, the analysis covers Anthropic's enterprise growth logic, competitive landscape, and the rationality of its $2 trillion valuation.

According to Woofun AI, on October 14, Anthropic held a pre-IPO investor meeting at its San Francisco headquarters, officially disclosing its financial performance for the third quarter. This high-profile AI startup not only continued its strong revenue growth momentum but also announced to the market that it had achieved adjusted profitability.

This financial turning point marks Anthropic’s transition from a phase of solely pursuing rapid growth to a critical stage where it faces the test of profitability, establishing a core factual anchor for its upcoming public listing.

The explosive growth in revenue data and the deep breakdown of how profitability is defined form the core highlights of this earnings report. Anthropic’s third quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up a significant 45% from $11.6 billion in the second quarter, while first quarter revenue was $4.7 billion. The remarkable growth for three consecutive quarters directly reflects the continuously expanding demand from enterprise clients for its models and services.

However, the profitability situation has also drawn in-depth attention from the market. Although the company announced adjusted profitability for the third quarter, it is important to note that this differs fundamentally from net profit calculated under GAAP. Adjusted figures typically exclude certain share-based incentives, asset impairments, and other specific items, so they cannot be equated directly to ongoing profitability from overall operations. Looking back at the full year 2025, Anthropic had operating losses exceeding $8 billion and a net loss approaching $42 billion. Earlier reports on its financial condition pointed out that the huge net loss in 2025 was affected by factors such as revaluation of financing-related liabilities, leading to a significant gap between actual operating loss and net loss.

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that judging whether the company has truly achieved sustainable profitability requires a complete earnings report and a deep examination of the profit structure and operating cash flow, rather than relying solely on single-quarter adjusted data.

Refined product matrix layout, channel synergy, and intense cost competition collectively drove this performance. Revenue growth was mainly driven by continued enterprise adoption of the Claude model series, with growing demand for the models in professional fields such as finance, law, and software development; generative AI is gradually becoming an integral part of daily enterprise workflows. The Claude 4 series, launched in May this year, strengthened the model’s competitiveness in professional tasks, while the recently released Haiku 5.5 focuses on low-cost applications. This model’s price is 75% lower than the previous generation, aiming to cover scenarios sensitive to inference efficiency and cost at a lower usage price, directly competing with models such as OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna.

In addition, cloud service partners provide important sales channels for Anthropic. Google (GOOGL.US) and Amazon (AMZN.US) are not only investors in the company but also suppliers of computing power. Claude can reach enterprise clients through Google Cloud and Amazon (AMZN.US) AWS, leveraging established cloud platform customer networks to expand sales scale.

This partnership, combining investment, computing power supply, and commercial distribution, offers strong support for Anthropic to expand into the enterprise market. As the scale of business increases, whether these channels can continue to drive revenue growth and help the company control customer acquisition and computing power costs will directly affect whether its profitability can be sustained.

The competitive landscape among giants is being reshaped, and competition between Anthropic, OpenAI, and emerging players is intensifying. Anthropic’s $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue has led the market to reassess its competitive position relative to OpenAI. Recently, investors have revised their annualized revenue expectations for OpenAI down from $70 billion to about $50 billion. Based on a simple quarterly average, this translates to roughly $12.5 billion per quarter, which is less than Anthropic’s disclosed third-quarter figure of $16.8 billion.

However, these two sets of numbers are not entirely comparable. Anthropic disclosed actual quarterly revenue, while OpenAI’s $50 billion is investors’ expectation for annualized revenue, not confirmed quarterly financial data. Based on these numbers alone, it cannot be concluded that Anthropic has fully surpassed OpenAI in revenue scale. Reports also mentioned that the market previously estimated OpenAI’s annualized revenue based on Anthropic’s growth rate, arriving at a figure of about $70 billion before revising expectations downward. This indicates that investors are beginning to reevaluate the growth rates of both companies, no longer judging OpenAI’s revenue performance solely by its previous industry-leading position. The two companies also have different business structures: OpenAI has a larger individual user market, with subscription products being a major source of revenue; Anthropic, however, focuses more on enterprise clients, whose contracts are usually larger in monetary value and can result in varying revenue recognition and delivery cycles affecting quarterly performance.

Meanwhile, competitors continue to increase. Meta (META.US) recently launched Muse Wonder, aiming to compete with ChatGPT and Claude in programming, finance, and legal tasks. Chinese firms such as Zhipu and Alibaba (BABA.US) are continuously rolling out lower-priced models, vying for the enterprise client and developer markets. Gaps in model capabilities, inference costs, and product pricing are collectively influencing enterprise procurement choices. The significant price cut for Haiku 5.5 reflects that while Anthropic is expanding its market, it must also face increasingly fierce price competition.

Valuation reconstruction and future investment commitments will become key measures of Anthropic’s long-term value. The market’s valuation expectations for Anthropic have reached $1.8 to 2 trillion. According to a prospectus reported by the media in September, Anthropic’s revenue in 2025 was projected to increase twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion, while operating losses for the same period would expand from $2.98 billion in 2024 to $8.06 billion. Based on those figures, the price-earnings ratio appeared extremely high. However, based on the third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion, simple annualization yields approximately $67.2 billion in revenue.

At a $2 trillion valuation, this translates to a price-to-sales ratio of about 30. For an AI company still in a high-growth phase, this valuation appears more realistic. Achieving adjusted profitability in the third quarter does not mean Anthropic is now able to cover all long-term investments, but profitability does mean it now has the capacity to expand investments. Anthropic has already committed to investing at least $518 billion in cloud services, computing power, and infrastructure over the next decade. At least judging by the Q3 earnings report, Anthropic’s valuation for the IPO has withstood an initial test.

If AI capital expenditure slows down, a sudden halt in computing power construction will severely impact the supply chain while lowering market expectations for demand in electricity, commodities, and high-end hardware. This not only leads to a correction of overvalued assets, but also undermines growth expectations and inflation premiums, ultimately benefiting bonds. This logic is highly similar to the macroeconomic landscape during the bursting of the internet bubble in 2000, when the Nasdaq collapsed and the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds dropped from a high of 6.5% to the 4% range.
