CoreWeave Dilemma for Nvidia: Forced to Rescue or Stand By?

CoreWeave Dilemma for Nvidia: Forced to Rescue or Stand By?

华尔街见闻2026/10/15 00:21
By: 华尔街见闻
As both a shareholder of CoreWeave and its sole GPU supplier, Nvidia now faces a dilemma after the sharp decline in CoreWeave's stock price. If it intervenes, each rescue strengthens expectations of a safety net, raises the threshold for future rescues, and risks getting further entangled in this high-leverage game. If it does not intervene, CoreWeave's liquidity crisis will directly cut off demand for GPU purchases, simultaneously devaluing Nvidia's equity investment and severely damaging its market reputation.

The financial entanglements between Nvidia and CoreWeave are evolving into a complex game theory dilemma.

According to Wallstreet News, under the dual pressures of unexpectedly hot inflation data and rising US Treasury yields on Wednesday, shares of data center operator CoreWeave plunged more than 15%, marking the third largest single-day drop in its history and bringing it just one step away from its all-time low.

Well-known financial analyst Quoth the Raven (QTR) wrote in a ZeroHedge column that as CoreWeave’s stock price comes under pressure and its financing channels shrink, Nvidia is facing a tricky choice: step in to bail out CoreWeave once again, or stand by and watch this cloud computing customer—who is highly dependent on its chips—fall into a liquidity crisis?

CoreWeave’s troubles may emerge before any actual debt default comes to light. The continued decline in its share price alone could trigger a vicious cycle, as a stock crash undermines market confidence, further cutting off external financing and ultimately accelerating a liquidity crisis.

For companies like CoreWeave, which rely heavily on external capital to maintain operations, stock market volatility alone can push them to the edge even before a default occurs.

The potential impact of this situation on Nvidia goes far beyond a single investment loss on paper. Nvidia previously participated in rescuing CoreWeave’s downsized IPO with a $250 million subscription order, and later injected several billion more dollars, tying its fortunes deeply to this company.

Dual Roles Put Nvidia in a Dilemma

The article points out that the relationship between Nvidia and CoreWeave is far more complicated than that of an ordinary investor and an investee company.

Nvidia is not only a shareholder of CoreWeave, but also its sole hardware supplier for core business operations. The billions of dollars in debt that CoreWeave has borrowed are essentially used to purchase Nvidia chips. This high overlap between supplier and shareholder roles means their financial interests are tied together at an exceptional depth.

If CoreWeave falls into trouble, its demand for GPU hardware will inevitably shrink, which will directly impact Nvidia’s revenue. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s large equity investment in CoreWeave will also face impairment risks.

This dual exposure creates a classic game theory dilemma: rescuing CoreWeave is costly, but not rescuing could be just as unbearable.

The "No Choice But to Save" Logic Trap

What the market is really worried about is not whether Nvidia is willing to step in again, but whether it will find itself with no other choice.

This logic has precedents. When CoreWeave’s IPO failed to meet expectations, Nvidia invested $250 million to subscribe, which was widely interpreted as a credit endorsement.

This investment stabilized market sentiment at the time, but also set an implicit expectation for Nvidia—in the event that CoreWeave raises a fresh alarm, the market will take Nvidia’s rescue efforts for granted.

The problem is, every rescue raises the bar for the next one. If CoreWeave’s shares drop further and trigger a liquidity crisis, Nvidia will not only face a financial decision at that point, but also a PR test affecting its market credibility.

Broader Market Concerns

The warning significance of the CoreWeave case may extend far beyond its own size.

This company’s business model—taking on large amounts of debt to buy GPUs, then monetizing through computing power leasing—is a typical high-leverage path in the current wave of AI infrastructure investment.

If this model is stress-tested against tightening capital markets and slowing demand growth, the ripple effects could hit the entire supply chain: expectations for GPU demand, cloud computing power pricing, and investors’ overall risk appetite for the AI infrastructure sector could all be challenged.

For Nvidia, the truly far-reaching effect of the CoreWeave dilemma is that it will force the market to reassess the risk transmission mechanism between the chip giant and its highly leveraged downstream clients—a mechanism that, during the peak phase of the AI bubble, was almost never priced in seriously.

No one wants to hold this market, but Goldman Sachs believes this is exactly the entry signal: three major rescues are about to return

Market sentiment has dropped to the lows last seen on “Parity Tariff Day” in April, but Goldman Sachs’s flow team believes that technical conditions in US equities are quietly shifting. The corporate buyback window will reopen on a large scale from the end of October to November, mutual fund year-end selling pressure will dissipate after Halloween, and historical seasonal buying from retail and foreign investors will take over. Buybacks, retail investors, and foreign capital will all return almost simultaneously.
