SK Hynix reported Q3 revenue of $75.3 billion, surpassing one trillion Korean won for the first time. Operating profit reached a record high, while net profit was $28.6 billion, up 216% year-on-year but down 58% quarter-on-quarter, significantly below expectations. The company announced a dividend of $10.1 billion and a share buyback of $14.4 billion, and predicts that the memory shortage will continue until 2030.

According to Woofun AI, SK hynix (SKHY.US) delivered a highly impressive earnings report in the third quarter of 2026, recording a net profit of 39.78 trillion KRW (approximately $28.6 billion). This figure not only highlights its dominance in the AI storage sector, but is also accompanied by management’s long-term outlook on industry supply and demand: the global shortage of memory chips is expected to persist until 2030.

From a deeper look at its financial structure, both revenue and operating profit reached all-time highs, revealing strong growth momentum in its core business. SK hynix's revenue for the quarter reached 104.62 trillion KRW (approximately $75.3 billion), an explosive year-on-year increase of 327.9% and a quarter-on-quarter growth of 32%; operating profit soared to 83.33 trillion KRW (approximately $60 billion), up 632.1% year-on-year and 38% quarter-on-quarter.

However, net profit did not maintain the peak seen in the previous quarter. While third-quarter net profit rose 216% year-on-year, it fell well below market expectations of 59.66 trillion KRW; second-quarter net profit hit as high as 93.92 trillion KRW (approximately $67.6 billion), resulting in a 58% quarter-on-quarter decline for the third quarter. This divergence was not due to a weakness in core operations, but primarily because the second quarter included massive non-operating gains from Kioxia investments; by comparison, the continuous record-high operating profit more accurately reflects the resilience of the memory chip business.

In terms of shareholder returns, SK hynix has launched an unprecedented cash feedback plan. The company announced a cash dividend of 14 trillion KRW (approximately $10.1 billion), with a third-quarter dividend per share of 20,000 KRW, composed of a regular dividend of 10,000 KRW and a special dividend of 10,000 KRW from Kioxia investment returns; the company will also additionally repurchase 20 trillion KRW worth of shares (approximately $14.4 billion). On a full-year basis, total shareholder returns for 2026 are expected to reach about 100 trillion KRW (around $72 billion), including at least 30 trillion KRW in cash dividends (about $21.6 billion) and at least 60 trillion KRW in annual share repurchases and cancellations (about $43.2 billion).

This series of measures is intended to fulfill its promise to return over 50% of cumulative free cash flow from 2025 to 2027. Of the 20 trillion KRW buyback decided in the third quarter, about 10 trillion KRW will be cancelled and another 10 trillion KRW used for employee compensation, the latter of which is not included in the total amount returned to shareholders.

Furthermore, on October 21, the company completed ahead of schedule the previously announced 40 trillion KRW (approximately $28.8 billion) share buyback plan from August, repurchasing a total of 24.07 million shares, accounting for 3.3% of the issued shares, with plans to cancel all repurchased shares.

Data compiled by Woofun AI highlight a significant improvement in SK hynix’s financial health, with all profitability indicators strengthening. The third-quarter gross profit margin reached 86%, operating margin was 80%, and EBITDA margin was 84%—up 3, 4, and 3 percentage points from the previous quarter, respectively. Diluted earnings per share came in at 54,454 KRW (about $39.2), down about 58% quarter-on-quarter, but still far higher than the approximately 18,000 KRW (about $13) in the same period of 2025. Net profit margin stood at 38%. On the balance sheet, cash and cash equivalents rose to 114.5 trillion KRW (approximately $82.4 billion), borrowings fell to 15.8 trillion KRW, and net cash reached a robust 98.7 trillion KRW (about $71 billion), providing ample liquidity for future capacity expansion and R&D.

On the product drivers side, HBM4’s mass production and growth of DDR5 are the main engines. SK hynix stated that third-quarter DRAM business benefited from significant increases in server DDR5 sales, with HBM4 also beginning to ship in volume; in NAND, sales of 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs increased. The company has signed long-term supply agreements with 14 major customers (including global cloud service providers), covering more than half its production capacity from 2027 to 2028, with contract prices adjusted as markets change. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, HBM4 shipment volume and revenue are expected to surpass HBM3E, becoming the mainstream product.

At the same time, the company plans to increase the proportion of sixth-generation 10nm-class (1c) process nodes, expand DDR5 and LPDDR5 SOCAMM sales aimed at AI servers, and boost the ratio of 321-layer process products to over half of its domestic capacity. In the mid- to long-term, high-bandwidth flash (HBF) and system optimization technologies are expected to further enhance NAND throughput and economic efficiency in AI services.

Regarding capital expenditure strategy and capacity construction, SK hynix has taken a relatively reserved approach to disclosures. The company expects that, with the Yongin Phase 1 project entering full operation in 2027, both domestic and overseas infrastructure investment in Korea will significantly increase.

However, the company has not provided specific figures for next year’s capital expenditures, nor disclosed the latest budgets and production schedules for the Yongin cluster, Cheongju P&T7, and its U.S. advanced packaging plant. SK hynix stressed it will adjust the size and timing of investments flexibly according to customer demand, product competitiveness, profitability, and investment efficiency. The capacity of the M15X plant will be raised to the maximum level by year-end to increase HBM4 supply, reflecting the company's balanced consideration between expansion and efficiency.

The competitive landscape, risks and challenges, and recent strategic adjustments form the complex background for the present. As a key HBM supplier for Nvidia (NVDA.US) AI accelerators, SK hynix faces intense competition from Samsung Electronics and Micron (MU.US) in HBM product R&D and capacity expansion. Chinese memory makers are also expanding their shares in the traditional DRAM and NAND markets, while their advanced product mass production capabilities remain to be seen. Due to uncertainty regarding capital spending by cloud giants, memory sector stock prices have seen large pullbacks in the past two weeks; SK hynix shares surged over 4% in early trading on October 28, but market volatility has impacted its capital deployment. Last week, SK hynix suspended the potential IPO and financing evaluation for its U.S. subsidiary Solidigm, reflecting a cautious attitude in the face of market fluctuations. In the coming quarters, the pace of HBM4 mass production and customer certification progress will directly determine whether SK hynix can further expand its edge in the high-end market, while shifts in supply and demand will be key variables testing its prediction of shortages through 2030.
