UK public sector net borrowing reached £24.5 billions in September, slightly higher than expected.

⑴ In September 2026, the UK's public sector net borrowing (excluding public sector banks) totaled 24.5 billion pounds, slightly higher than 22.8 billion pounds in the same period last year and the market expectation of 23.9 billion pounds.⑵ This is the second highest September borrowing on record, only surpassed by September 2020 (not adjusted for inflation), as spending growth exceeded income growth.⑶ Total expenditure increased year-on-year by 670 million pounds to reach 123.8 billion pounds, while total revenue rose by 490 million pounds to 99.3 billion pounds.
