- According to Iranian sources, a supertanker carrying crude oil caught fire after hitting a mine in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state television reported the news quoting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s major energy transportation corridors.
- Tehran stated that the vessel was carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil. Its sailing route was deemed irregular by Iran, and the impact caused an explosion and fire onboard. As of the 20th, there has been no independent confirmation that the vessel hit a mine; Iranian authorities also initially did not disclose the vessel’s name, flag, crew status, or potential environmental damage.
- The United States Central Command questioned the claim, stating that there are no records of any vessels hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz. It also accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of spreading false information and intimidating commercial shipping in the region.
- The incident occurred at a time when navigational safety in the waters surrounding the Persian Gulf is becoming increasingly tense. Previously, maritime authorities reported that some vessels had been damaged by projectiles from unknown sources. At present, there are no official indications linking these events to the supertanker mentioned by Iran.
- The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, serving as a strategic chokepoint for global oil transportation.
