1. Oil prices fell on Friday as traders weighed the acceleration of emergency oil stock releases against Middle East supply risks and uncertainty regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. December Brent crude oil futures are currently down 0.5% at $105.31 per barrel; December WTI crude oil futures are currently down 0.8% at $95.78 per barrel.2. The International Energy Agency said on Thursday that its member countries had agreed to accelerate the release of approximately 100 million barrels of previously committed emergency oil reserves, including over 20 million barrels of diesel to be released as soon as possible. About 330 million barrels of crude oil have already been released, and the agency said the total release will exceed the initial 400 million barrels agreed upon in March, with some member states contributing additional crude oil.3. Analysts at ING said that although Middle Eastern oil shipments have somewhat recovered, continued uncertainty surrounding the conflict is still supporting oil prices. The bank noted that a continued recovery of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could gradually reduce the geopolitical risk premium, but only an agreement between the US and Iran would give the market greater confidence in sustaining higher shipment volumes.4. The oil market is also assessing US crude oil inventory data released on Thursday. According to the US Energy Information Administration, US commercial crude oil inventories fell by 8.6 million barrels last week to 415.6 million barrels; distillate stocks fell by 2.5 million barrels and remain 12% below the five-year average.5. US crude oil futures rose on Thursday due to a sharp drop in API inventories, while Brent crude fell slightly. ING said that the inventory decline partly reflects production disruptions caused by hurricanes and reduced crude oil imports.6. Shipping risks remain elevated. The Wall Street Journal reported that two cargo ships sank after being attacked near the Strait of Hormuz; the UK Maritime Trade Operations also said on Wednesday that two container ships were struck by unidentified flying objects while transiting the waterway.
