Impacted by rising energy costs, the U.S. Producer Price Index for September has exceeded expectations across the board, indicating that the effects of higher energy prices are spreading to various sectors of the U.S. economy. According to data released on Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Producer Price Index for September increased by 1.3% month-over-month and 6.3% year-over-year. Excluding food and energy, the core PPI rose 0.7% month-over-month and 5% year-over-year. The report shows that even as fuel prices climb, underlying inflationary pressures in the U.S. remain stubborn. With only a few weeks left until the November midterm elections, the burden of living costs has become a central issue. This data may prompt Federal Reserve officials to continue raising interest rates in the coming months, especially as another report released on Wednesday showed that a key consumer price indicator for September also climbed more than expected. The report further reveals that price pressures are expected to remain elevated in the coming months. The indicator measuring input price expectations for the next six months has risen to its highest level since 2022.
