【European Battery Storage Industry Welcomes a Highly Profitable Winter】(1) As short-term electricity price volatility approaches levels seen during the 2022 energy crisis, European battery storage operators are set to experience one of their most profitable winters to date. (2) Due to the impact of the Iran war disrupting energy markets, natural gas prices are currently hovering near a four-year high. Whenever gas power plants begin generating electricity, electricity prices rise accordingly. (3) Meanwhile, the continued expansion of Europe's wind and solar power generation has resulted in frequent, sharp drops in electricity prices when renewable energy supply is abundant, further widening the intra-day gap between the highest and lowest electricity prices. Since the last energy crisis, Europe has invested around $40 billion in the battery storage sector, and now, large-scale storage facilities are poised to capitalize on this opportunity. (4) This winter will serve as a test: whether the scale of storage expansion is sufficient to fulfill its promise—curbing electricity price spikes and ultimately reducing consumer electricity costs. Paul Sheffield, Chief Commercial Officer of UK's power company Drax Group, pointed out that the colder weather and the unpredictability of wind levels have intensified intra-day electricity price volatility, creating a more favorable market environment for battery storage.
